Clean Tailpipe Technology May Power Reefer Truck Units

Quote:
Companies that haul refrigerated products may soon have new cheap and clean technology to power their reefer units. The Clean Energy Storage and Recovery system (CESAR) uses heat from a truck's tailpipe to generate power to run the refrigeration unit.
The "zero carbon footprint" technology is being developed by the Clean Power Technologies Company in Newhaven, East Sussex, England. The firm was visited recently by representatives of Cascade Sierra Solutions - an Oregon based non-profit firm that specializes in providing clean trucks and clean technology to the transportation industry.
"When I first heard about the technology, I said, ‘This is crazy, there is absolutely no way it is going to work,'" says Joel Smith, an engineer with Cascade who has spent a 30-plus-year career in the trucking industry. Now that he has visited the company's headquarters, viewed the system, and spoken with the engineers, he is a believer.
