Borders to get $88 million to scan for commercial ‘contraband’

Borders to get $88 million to scan for commercial ‘contraband’

Napolitano's announcement today includes eight contracts for NII technologies to provide fixed and mobile detection capabilities for deployment by CBP at and between U.S. ports-of-entry.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano today announced $88 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding for Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII) equipment — enhancing border security by expanding U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) capabilities to scan commercial traffic for contraband through X-ray and other imaging technologies, stated a DHS news release.

"These cutting-edge technologies will help us better detect threats at our nation's borders while expediting legitimate travel and trade," said Napolitano. "The Recovery Act has infused critical resources into local economies across the country while strengthening our nation's security."

That's funny, I thought they already had this? But it would be nice if they could inspect, with these devices, say another 50% at least. This would bring us closer to 100% inspected crossing our borders. Of course, in hubby's case, this is too little and too late.

Seems that most of the borders I cross have these things. But then again, they are the ones with Canada and the legal crossings.

Just think how much more contraband they could find if they were used? I know they use them for those vehicles that require a more thorough inspection. I think they should be used on all commercial vehicles entering through our border, but then I don't get paid to think. But I do realize it's just not feasible due to the congestion on the border, which really sucks. So much for security and the war on drugs and terror.
