Based on what I've been spoon fed so far, it's going to get bad out here for drivers next year. There will be a shortage of drivers by the end of 2010.

And many newbies won't survive their first month as a solo driver.

The term "Judge Dredd" comes to mind with the authority that will be granted to the DOT under CSA 2010.

I'll expand on that a bit, when I've confirmed what I've been told.
Looks like another extended christmas vacation for me.

Nah, most of the time if I get laid off or try to change jobs in the winter I end up not finding anything until spring. If they're really serious about nailing us for thousands upon thousands of dollars or worse, it's time to find something else to do.

My memo says worse.

I'll quote what it says. But be advised, I have not found any supporting documents yet.

It says plainly, that a DOT officer will have the ability to suspend/revoke the license of ANY driver they deem to be unfit or dangerous. This can take place at a roadside stop, scale...or where ever they want.

Once again...I have not confirmed this. And I'm looking for further clarification/explanation. If nothing else, I'll have to wait until our safety meeting. Our Safety Director is retired LEO. So I have no reason to disbelieve him....yet.

Well, dangerous is pretty clear cut but "unfit" is dangerously vague.

No way in hell they can do that without a 100% clear cut reason.
I doubt they could anyway.
I am not in the least bit worried about the new system. Not at all.
I have been inspected many times over the years and never had any issue.
The only thing I am watching is the rumors that points will be assessed on licenses for non-moving violations like over weight loads or equipment violations. And really I am not too concerned about that either, since there is not way they could hold that up in court giving license points for that.
Now giving points on there system they can do, that is TOTALLY different.
There system is to replace the driver SEA Value on Safestat online.
It is to keep track of all driver violations in one location. This was supposed to have been being done since 1991 when CDL laws went into effect. All tickets to CDL drivers were supposed to be reported into a central database. This included all states, so a driver could not go state to state with new CDLs if his record got too bad.
It did not happen before, but will now.
The drivers that will be effected mostly from this are the ones that are not running legal. If they are working there logs too much, or not keeping there trucks maintained then they will be off the road in short order. And to me that is a good thing.

One of our drivers was cited for going 57 in a 60 a couple of days ago. He had just come out of a construction zone that was 45 and was within 100 yards of the 60 mph sign in IL. was pulled over and ticketed. I know that technically he was at fault, but come on!

I don't know how the guy feels about arguing this ticket in front of a Judge. But, I am aware of one that was tossed out under similar conditions.

The Judge ruled the officer had expectations that a driver would be doing 35 mph by the time the driver reached a sign posting the speed limit as 35 mph. So it was not unreasonable for the driver to have the same expectation when the sign reflected an increase in speed, so long as the sign was within the drivers sight.

This was an Al case. Might not work in IL. But, it could be worth the effort.
