Cops, trucker cited in fatal I-65 crash

Nearly four months after five members of a Hobart family died in a fiery crash on Interstate 65, a report cites the Lake County police and a truck driver who was not paying attention as causing the collision.

Brian and Joanna Workman died with their three children -- Ashley, 13, Tyler, 8, and 1-year-old Ryan -- on June 26 when their Dodge pickup was crushed between two tractor-trailers and burst into flames.

"If traffic would not had been stopped, this crash would not have occurred," Indiana State Police Senior Trooper Thomas Quinn, an accident reconstructionist, said in a 17-page report made public this week by Joanna Workman's parents.

When the interstate traffic slowed, a Con-way Freight truck driver, Forest Stover, slammed into the back of the Workman vehicle and pushed it into a flat-bed truck hauling steel coils.

Well thank God they got that guy for not wearing his seat belt. Someone might have died!

This is what gets me...they chase some guy for not wearing a seatbelt, but tailgaters, lane-weavers, "I-don't'-merge-properly-'cuz-I-can't-pause-my-conversation-on-the-phone-that-is-glued-to-my-ear"-types, and other such dangerous driving habits are ignored.

This is a tragic story, and highlights the idiocy of priorities law enforcement sometimes has (not to discount the fault of the trucker who hit the pickup).
