Bridge Linking Portsmouth And Kittery Closed

Quote:
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) -- A key link between Portsmouth, N.H. and Kittery, Maine, will be closed for at least six weeks.

Transportation officials in the two states said the decision was made after an inspection showed deterioration of a truss on the northern end of the bridge, which carries U.S. Route 1 over the Piscataqua River.

Officials tell the Portsmouth Herald the repairs likely will involve adding new steel plates over existing ones that have rusted severely. The bridge will remain open to walkers and bicyclists, but motorists will be rerouted to the Route 1 bypass or Interstate 95.
