HOS, EOBRs again make the headlines

Eye on Trucking: HOS, EOBRs again make the headlines (will it ever stop?)

Quote:

So here’s our suggestion to Congress. If you want the 10-hour driving time restored, codify the Hours of Service rule.
If you want to hasten the day when all trucks have EOBRs, approve a generous tax credit.

They’re baaaaaack.

After taking a back seat to freight tonnage and lost jobs, Hours of Service and Electronic On-Board Recorders (EOBRs) are in the headlines once more.

The ink was barely dry on Barb Kampbell’s piece on the latest legal wrangling concerning HOS in the October 1-14 issue when the letters started coming (see Letters to the Editor on this page).

And, Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg, D.-N.J., made it very clear during Anne Ferro’s re-cent confirmation hearing to become administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that he wasn’t happy with the current rule.

Lautenberg said the FMCSA needs a leader who will reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities. Drivers and passengers should not have to fear sharing the roads with a large truck, he added.

How about making sure we don't have to fear being on the road with idiots in cars?

Electronic On-Board Recorders (EOBRs)

EORBs are not the "magic" cure all. Until the root cause of why drivers "improvise" on their logs is fixed nothing will improve. IE: waiting for next load info, waiting to load/unload ect. for no pay, company threats of firing to deliver a "Hot" load, just to name a few.

If the FMCSA was truely interested in increasing safety they would focus on where their own safety data shows the problems are ........

Speaking of idiots in cars, I just had one pull out into my lane and try to headon me. I had to swerve at another car turning behind him, missed everything by inches. I'm starting to seriously hate Michigan. I also hate whatever moron decided the air horn should be placed in the middle out of reach.

So am I getting this straight? They want to reduce our hours even further? Did I read that properly?

Are you by chance driving a Western Star? I have found it hard to get the air horn in time most times even with it on the left, and driving the Star, as much as I liked it, made it hard to switch back to the air horn on the left. I found it more intuitive to grab the cable with my right hand.

Nah, it's a Kenworth T800. It was fine where it was on the left, right within easy reach. On this one I have to lean forward and reach for the thing almost to the center of the windshield. And I'm 6'4" built like a giant spider. I don't see how shorter people reach it at all. As it was I couldn't get to it until I had passed everything in my way.

Well you made it, anyway. Mine are easy to reach, but switching back after 2 months in a Star is awkward, I use the electric horn more often because this one actually works.
