Maryland toll road could cost truckers as much as $2.10 per mile

Once a new toll road is completed in Maryland, truckers can expect to pay between $1.50 and $2.10 per mile to use it during peak times.

The Maryland Transportation Authority has scheduled two public hearings this week concerning the toll rates for the Intercounty Connector, a 19-mile toll road to be built in phases with the first phase opening in fall 2010. Cost of the roadway is estimated at $1.7 billion.

The Authority has proposed a toll range of $1.50 to $2.10 for five-axle trucks during peak times, and a range of $1.20 to $1.80 during off-peak times. Six-axle trucks can expect to pay more. The toll road will be cashless, using E-ZPass as well as a camera system to send toll bills through the mail.
