Oregon's New Chain Rule Excludes Tandem Drive Axle Trucks

Oregon's New Chain Rule Excludes Tandem Drive Axle Trucks
Quote:
Under the Oregon Department of Transportation's recently modified chain regulation, tandem drive axle trucks are not required to use chains, but the regulation applies to single drive axle vehicles when signs are posted.

The change, which was requested by Oregon trucking associations, requires single drive axle vehicles over 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight to wear chains. It also applies to vehicles that are towing, such as a pickup towing a boat. Chains must also be used on the trailer or vehicle being towed.

"There are times when large multi-axle trucks might not need to put on chains, but single drive axle trucks over 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight or vehicles towing trailers will need to chain up," said George Ruby, ODOT district 12 manager. "The new chain condition is another tool for ODOT to use during inclement weather conditions and we expect it will help keep traffic moving with fewer tie-ups."

With Oregon's varied climate, winter weather conditions are unpredictable, ODOT says.

Error in Oregon Chain Law post

The post about Oregon's chain regulations is a bit misleading. The post implies that tandem-drive axle vehicles do not have to use chains in Oregon at any time. That is not true.

Tandem-drive axle vehicles must use chains when signs are posted that say "Chains Required on Vehicles Towing or Over 10,000 GVW" or "Chains Required - Traction Tires Allowed on Vehicles Under 10,000 GVW."

And, in "Conditional Closure" situations, all vehicles may be required to use chains regardless of the type of vehicle.

The new chain condition, "Chains required on vehicles towing or single drive axle over 10,000 GVW," does allow tandem-drive axle vehicles to go without chains, but ONLY when that sign is posted.

The Oregon Department of Transportation recommends that all truck drivers review Oregon Chain regulations and get familiar with the different snow zone and chain conditions. Chain regulations are posted along with snow zone notices, diagrams and more on Oregon's travel information Web site, TripCheck.
