Fatal ammonia release at CF terminal kills driver

NEW YORK — CF Industries Holdings Inc. said a fatal release of anhydrous ammonia at its Pine Bend, Minn., terminal killed one truck driver and injured another.

Late Monday night the company said the released ammonia had dissipated and did not present a hazard to the community. Officials and company personnel have launched a full investigation of the accident, which occurred during loading operations.

Brian Spencer, general manager of distribution facilities for CF Industries, said the injured worker was taken to an area hospital with "undetermined injuries."

    A noise - a bang! - a deadly cloud

    A noise - a bang! - a deadly cloud

Under the big fluorescent lights, the two truck drivers who had pulled into Rosemount from Oklahoma seemed to be having trouble with a connection in the piping that one would use to pump the anhydrous ammonia into his semitrailer truck.

Witnesses said there were noises, then a bang, and the escape of invisible but deadly anhydrous ammonia that killed one driver and critically injured the other Monday evening.

Police and another truck driver dragged one trucker from the immediate area of the vapors, which had been dissipating into the nearby woods, and began cutting his soaked clothing off of him.

That NH3 will make you hysterical. When that stuff hits you got to get your clothes off and jump in the wash tub or you could die a painfull death. I often go to places like Calamco and Agrium and they use it to make fertilizers like UAN32 and CAN17. I once saw a few guys running from a railcar they were unloading and I shut off my pump and ran like hell with them not quite knowing what I was running from. Luckily nothing happend and everybody got back to work but it was a pretty wierd thing to have happen on the second load I had ever done.
