LOS ANGELES (AP) - Truckers in a long-running dispute with three companies at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have started what they say is an indefinite strike.
The truckers argue they are full-time employees, not independent contractors, and should be paid accordingly.
Truckers' spokeswoman Barb Maynard says workers formed picket lines Monday morning outside the companies' yards.
The strike could have broader impacts on trade through the twin ports, the main gateway for goods going to and from Asia.
Maynard says picketers will follow trucks making runs to marine shipping terminals.
Dockworkers would then decide whether to cross those lines. Their union is negotiating a new contract with companies that ship goods through all West Coast ports.
An International Longshore and Warehouse Union spokesman says he's unsure what dockworkers would do.

That, added to the ongoing ILWU/PMA contract negotiations, California regulations that make it hard to be a trucker in California and general driver shortages in southern California means this could happen.

I just read an update on the dock worker's negotiations before seeing your post:

ILWU/PMA Contract Negotiation General Info :

    July 7, 2014 11:09 AM
Today Monday July 7th we’ve been advised that the Trucking Teamsters may be aiming to cause maximum disruption at container terminals in order to bring more pressure on their cause, i.e. the unionization of several Southern California harbor trucking companies which is totally unrelated to the ILWU negotiation. The timing is ideal because without an ILWU contract, the ability for us to arbitrate non bonafide picket lines is not available. There are a number individuals in communication on the issue last evening, from the mayor of Los Angeles (who is strongly trying to get the Teamsters to shift their activities away from the container terminals), to PMA and ILWU who are in discussions on how to minimize the impact. We hope that an agreement can be implemented under which such picketing will only cause minimal and short term disruption.

Please make note---, there is now a strong possibility that the IWLU contract negotiations could be temporarily suspended while the ILWU focuses on a separate grain terminal negotiations in the PNW. In this type of instance a contract extension could be signed on (today) Monday, to be in effect from Tuesday morning until at least Friday morning. We will keep everyone advised if an extension is actually signed.
