| P-I warned on risk of drivers strike P-I warned on risk of drivers strike 2/19/08 Quote:
The Teamsters union that represents Seattle Times Co. truck drivers sent a letter to the Seattle P-I publisher Monday warning him that his operation could be affected if the union decides to take action against The Times.
The Seattle Times has said that it plans to outsource its trucking operations to Penske Logistics Inc., which the union has protested.
Negotiations between The Times and the union are ongoing.
In its letter Monday, the union threatened that if the outsourcing occurs without "the full support of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and all of its affiliated locals," the union could strike, picket or organize a boycott.
"We are therefore writing to you to inform you, first, that should we be forced to take any of the above-described measures against the Times, it is not our intent to inflict any economic or operational injury against the P-I or The Hearst Corp.," wrote Teamsters Local 174 Secretary-Treasurer Rick Hicks. "And we will take all appropriate steps to minimize any collateral injury which either of those entities may suffer."
The union encouraged the P-I to work with it so that copies of the newspaper could be distributed in the event of a strike. Teamsters Local 174 business agent Patty Warren said she isn't sure what such an arrangement would look like. seattle>>>>>> | |
