First of all I have a wife and a son and we have for sure a middle class life! What am I supposed to say when I am making it just fine out there, but hearing lots of people cry on here because they don't know how to get good paying freight or how to turn down cheap freight!

There is much, much easier way to do this. Simply quit hauling cheap freight and charge what you need to make money and if they won't give it to you then go somewhere else, or do something else.

for example

Loggers and Dumps are struggling right now for more reasons than the average OTR driver because of the housign market in a slump. No houses being built means no dump work and no demand for wood. So what do you do? Obviously there is not a demand out there for dumps/loggers so go do something else or try to stick it out until the market picks back up. A guy I know normally pulls end dumps is now pulling a skateboard because there is no work around here. He still pulls his end dump when there is work, but when no work he is going up to Chicago and hauling coils back.

I also hear many O/O's whining because they signed a contract with a carrier with no clause for fuel rates going up. That is bottom line a bad business decison, so why should I ask my goverment to help the bad business men out? I am making money, so why can't you? Freight is up right now, so what is the big problem?

Hey if you want to run, nobody is stopping you.

Just be careful when you go under overpasses,

Get some locking fuel caps, you never know what some vandal might drop in there.

Carry a spare tire, or maybe you should carry a couple.

Check all your drain plugs, you never know, they might have loosened up somehow.

Probably be a good idea to carry some spare air lines.

And read your insurance policy, you might want to change the deductible for broken glass.

Be Safe

Thanks I will keep that in mind! If it starts getting that bad where people are throwing crap off overpasses, I will park the truck and wait it out.

Thanks for all the tips on how to be a better trucker, the thread was set up for truckers who will honor and participate in the shut down, and if they needed some assistance they could come here. Despite what many have said we have made a major impression, and that is we can shut this down if we want, and we did it with no violence. These are our trucks, not yours, so I really don't think you have any say in how we wish to use them if at all. I have had my calls from our shippers and brokers thanking us for making this happen. We have already been informed of very positive increases in freight payments when we decide to start working again. So for those of you who said this would not work, I think its time to let it go. The next planned shutdown will affect you the company drivers. Regulation is on its way back in, this regulation will make it a level playing field. I hope the companies you work for continue on and hope you still have jobs, and if you do, jobs with better pay and benefits that we all deserve. If not, look at the companies leaving the US. Have a great day and please drive safe

Actually oil companies work on pretty low profit margins and are taxed way out of proportion in compared to what they make
I say hedge your rising cost by investing in oil companies
around 65% of oil company stock is either personally owned or part of a mutual fund.

I really find that hard to believe that they work on a low profit margin...
