The only thing truckers need to strike against is some of the well known crooked brokers that double dip on fuel/surcharges and freight miles. Driver can't afford to shut down in this bad time but they can say no to bad brokers. We need to black list bad brokers just like some companies use DAC to black list drivers.

A strike and the OOIDA are useless.. All they want is a membership fee so they can continue to buy fancy cars, cloths, sun glasses, have big parties to get drunk and stupid (not that they aren't already) and go on fany vacations. That is why unions themselves are going to go bye bye in the next decade IMOP

I have to agree. As long as companies keep hauling cheap frieght the rate will never change. Most frieght brokers are to blame for the cheap rates because they tell the shipper that they will move it for the rate they want to pay. We need to get all truckers and trucking companies to wake up and say no to the cheap rates. If the shipper does not want to pay a good rate then let their frieght sit on their dock. If the shipper can not move their frieght they will bring the rate up or go out of business. We also need to find a way to get rid of all these fly by night companies that don't last more that a few months.

I would say C.H.Robinson leads the group. They came in and undercut everyone even those who ran just intrastate, It was befor the bubble burst.....Brokers have been skimming from the start just did'nt notice it as much till the rates really went to the bottom. They have a life style to uphold and they do'nt care who's blood they have to suck...Well looks like the well ran dry.

With fuel prices lower than in a long time what would be the reasons for a strike? The reasons truckers should strike, aside from fuel prices, are the hours a driver works for free. This has become normal because it is the way it is. With companies keeping a far closer check on hours of service a driver has to run and log more legal. This means the funny book is not as funny any more. This also means that a truck driver has to settle for less money.
With the down turn in the economy it also means a driver has to sit more and of course for free. Wal-Mart has gone green and requires a driver wait up to four hours to unload and sometimes many more. A driver is required to kill their trucks even in the middle of winter. Most large companies don't have even have generators yet. Does anyone care? More companies are following suit and with a "green" president it will get worse.

A strike can and has been effective. There are many ways that this can be accomplished. How can it work, not be a complete trucking strike, and bring about a point? How can a strike happen without truckers turning against truckers?
During Vietnam people were against the war and took it out on he soldiers calling them baby killers, spitting on them, an other things. During the current war vast majority are against it. The difference is that the people are directing their anger at the powers to be and not the soldiers doing their job.
I am concerned about your comment about owner op's, company drivers not getting hurt, and company drivers not participating. Is this a cop-out in advance? Is it your theory that a company driver can't shut down because of what reason? Fear of losing his or her job? If a strike happened and enough drivers participated there can not be a grand firing.
It is commendable to state support for something and conveniently remove ones self, with great excuses. Reread your post with an open mind. You have stated support for a cause, as long as you( I can correctly assume that you are a company driver), and other "company drivers" are excluded. Let's make it an owner op strike. It won't work because the electric company somehow got involved and a family couldn't take a shower or eat. This is because propane and gas has not been invented yet?
WHEW!!! Thank God fuel prices dropped. There is now no reason for a strike and you are in the clear. I bet you are happy now.
The problem is that life never changes in one aspect. There are those that have and those that don't. Those that have make the rules and those that don't usually just follow the rules.
I am a company driver, make better wages than most, drive a large car, at home every night(poor Jodi), have a clean driving record, and when I want a job I just go get it. I support two households(no I am not divorced), have four grown children and seven grandchildren. I spend a lot on my family, don't have a portfolio or large bank account, and am a certified member of the have not's.
I would stop my truck in a heartbeat in support of justice.
Are there that many drivers that have the perfect job? That don't start a day sitting, waiting on dispatch?
    The senario:
A driver sits a half a day waiting on dispatch to get a 100 mile deadhead for a load picking up in the afternoon. The morning started at 7:00am(the call to dispatch), dispached at 1:00pm, picks up at 4:00pm and delivers 500 miles away at 8:00am the next morning.
With a little forgetfulnes(the 7:00 called that changed the duty status), a full fuel tank(no need to try to figure out how to log a fuel stop), many hours in the sleeper and going off duty for two hours. Showing leaving at 2:30 pm, logging 66.66 mph in a 65 mph truck(1 1/2 hours for the 100 miles), lets see how this works.
Log in a 1:45pm and perform the proverbial PTI and leave. Actually leave at 1:30pm and arrive at 3:30pm. Get a dock at 4:30pm and get loaded and head out at 5:55pm. Arrive at the shipper at 5:00am, find that there is a one hour window for pick up and delivery, and head for a truck stop. Eat something, think about taking a shower, and get to the receiver at 7:00am and get unloaded at 8:30am.
The company has fantastic benefits with a great health package, 401 plan, and pays $.36cpm(including deadhead). The trip pays $216.00 for ----25 1/2 hours. This is not too bad at $8.47 and hour. Of course a driver now has to get some sleep so does not get a load that day until 8:00am the next morning. Sleep catch up time.
If a driver can do this four more times in the pay period he(or she) can clear $757.00 for the week. Total hours away from home--504 hours(21 days), total hours worked, 225 hours(as the DOT definition explains for waiting to load ,unloading, PTI's , breakdowns, etc..), total miles driven--6400 miles. total pay--$2300.00 gross--total hours logged--98 1/2. $2300.00 divided by 225 hours = 10.22 an hour. Divided by the time away from home =$4.56 per hour. The fact that Jodi is keeping the wife satisfied---priceless. I'm sorry, I forgot the truck driver divorce rate is not 3.75 out of four.
With the economy getting worse and freight slowing down things will only get worse. but this is just a senario and never happens right?

I agree...that's why we are on here talking smack about a strike....because a union's time has long past....because we are all doing so well without organization...how redundant....
