I aint trying to be a good neighbor. Lord knows I hate CO at times too. But WY weather and road conditions can be very similar.

There are a lot of times when the weather might not be that bad in the truck stop but out on the open plains it still sucks.
I can assure you that the DOT does not keep the roads closed just special to piss Striker off. They have far more important things to do than to try and piss you off.
Your right, I've never drove in a white out blizzard in Oct. 2000 (Halloween) in Wyo. across I-80 from Elk to Laramie where the only way to determine where the road was, was to gently weave from one delineation marker to the other. The snow was blowing so bad, at times visibility was 10ft past my hood. I never knew it took over an hour to go from the 272 to 310, traction was great, it was the fact you couldn't see. I never was the lead truck in that "convoy" of about 40 trucks that rolled into Laramie at 6pm that night. Oh and I didn't spend 16 hrs sitting in the Wal-Mart parking lot with 50+ other trucks waiting for either 287 or Sherman to open, which they did finally open 287 and detoured several thousand trucks through downtown Ft. Collins.

IMHO, by comparison, WyDot does a 100% better job than CDOT does any day of the week. Again, at times there were white out conditions on Thursday, but there was no reason to close the road like they did. I left Denver at 7:45am to head to my pickup in Genoa (which my trailer is still there), it's normally a 90 minute drive, it took me 2 hrs because the EB lanes from Denver to Cedar Point were not plowed, sanded, etc., I never saw a plow, either side of the highway. Visibility never dropped below an 1/8th mile, when I was sitting at my customer loading, I'm about 250 yds from I-70, the entire time, even after the closed the road I could still see the highway. I-70 from Limon to Goodland never iced over, was not snow covered. The supervisor for my customer lives 11 miles E. in Arriba. He's a firefighter and even he couldn't understand why they closed the road, it wasn't that bad until about 5pm when the wind really quicked up.

Here's the problems, 1. CDOT is understaffed, they don't pay a decent enough wage for the Mtn. employees, as a result they can't get enough people. Hence, when the Mtn's get dumped on, they have to bring people in from the plains to work the Mtn's and short staff the plains. 2. Not to mention, because we are now a nation of sissies who cry about the slightest bit of snow on the ground, CDOT and CSP over react and jump the gun on things. 3. The ski areas pay so dman much money into the coffers of the state, that the state jumps and fetches for the ski areas to make sure the skiers can get through and screw everyone else. Why do you think we have these massive new fines for not chaining up? because the legislature wanted it? Do you know that the original proposal for the updated chain law included putting a chain law requirement for cars and RV's. But it was taken out by the first public reading because the ski areas were afraid the requirement would force skies to other states. Even a lot of the traffic reporters hate CDOT, I've got the traffic tip number for KOA, generally in the winter I'll call them with road report updates, espcially if I'm in the Mtn's. I've lost track fo the number of time one of the has asked me if I've seen a plow, as they are watching the cams are not seeing a single plow go by.

Company told me to get a hotel room, given that we didn't know how long the roads were going to be closed, if at all possible they didn't want the truck to idle that long. Ended up being closed EB for 25 hrs, I only had to sit for 20 hrs.

true, but there was no reason the road should have been closed, and why did it take 4 hrs after they opened WB to re-open EB. Oh, yeah, it was because I-70 was closed in Kansas. Which is kinda funny since EB I-70 in Kansas re-opened 3 hrs before EB I-70 in Colorado did.

The wind was easily blowing 40 mph here yesterday and I could barely see from the house to the barn, why go out in it if you don't have to?

well hell, I shoulda headed to your place

That is one thing I am glad about with Wyo., they will sometimes let you chain up and go even if the road is "closed". At least they have the good sense to understand that some people are smart enough to understand what they are doing.

yes they can, and winter in Wyo. can often be worse than Colo., but Wyo. does a much better job of handling it.

You were there, I wasn't.

Some times there are reasons for the road to be closed that we don't know about.
Like 80 some times will close in NE with perfectly good roads, because conditions in WY are so bad. The reason they will close in NE is because WY can no longer handle the amount of traffic. I'm sure folks in NE feel like there is no good reason to close the road where they are.

Sorry if I came across as a wick. Some times I get tired of posts that don't understand winter weather.

Okay, 3.14 you're just as bad as Duke...he he he...Seriously, if I ever get to Johnson's Corner, I hope to run across all of you. Y'all are such a great bunch of folks and I can't think of anything I'd love more than to share pots of coffee, a roll, and a lot of laughs, leading to a lifetime of memories.

All of you, be safe out there.

Went across 80 a couple years ago when the Escort crew was calling for Gate closings behind us. My muscles hurt so bad after that trip cross WY I never knew the meaning of Tense before that! One of the Trucks just up and blew over on the side, Empty Wagon. I had Transmissions in my Van that held me down to the road, for which I was Grateful. Half the time you couln't see the truck in front or behind ya.

Stiker I was stuck at Little America,Wy for 3 days one time. The second day they open I-80 and within an hour it was closed again due to idiots and Billy Big Riggers playing bumper cars. It took another day to clean 80 up. It was suggested to me when I began driving that I wait 30 minutes to an hour after the Highway reopens to allow those in a rush to get out.
