Colorado Blizzard!

Quote:
...BLIZZARD CONTINUES ACROSS NORTHEASTERN COLORADO...

.STRONG NORTH TO NORTHWEST WINDS AND MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOWFALL
WILL CONTINUE ACROSS THE NORTHEAST PLAINS OF COLORADO TONIGHT. AT
SUNSET THE HEAVIEST SNOW EXTENDED FROM NORTHEASTERN WELD COUNTY
ACROSS MORGAN COUNTY TO THE LIMON AREA. FURTHER EAST THE SNOW
INTENSITY WAS INCREASING...AND PERIODS OF HEAVY SNOW ARE EXPECTED
IN THOSE AREAS AS WELL DURING THE NIGHT. NORTHWEST WINDS AT 20 TO
35 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 45 MPH AND VISIBILITIES OF 100 TO 200 YARDS
WERE COMMON.

THE CENTER OF THIS STORM WILL MOVE SLOWLY EASTWARD FROM FAR
SOUTHEASTERN COLORADO INTO WESTERN KANSAS BY FRIDAY MORNING. AS IT
MOVES EASTWARD CONDITIONS WILL SLOWLY IMPROVE FROM WEST TO
EAST...WITH SOME IMPROVEMENT IN EASTERN ARAPAHOE...ADAMS...DOUGLAS AND
ELBERT COUNTIES LATER THIS EVENING WHILE FURTHER EAST THE IMPROVEMENT
WILL NOT COME UNTIL LATE TONIGHT.

ADDITIONAL SNOWFALL AMOUNTS OVERNIGHT WILL RANGE FROM 4 TO 12
INCHES...WITH THE LIGHTER AMOUNTS CLOSER TO DENVER. DRIFTS UP TO
FIVE FEET HAVE BEEN REPORTED...AND HEAVY DRIFTING WILL CONTINUE
MUCH OF THE NIGHT. ROADS ARE CLOSED IN THE AREAS RECEIVING HEAVY
SNOWFALL...AND FURTHER ROAD CLOSURES ARE LIKELY AS THE BRUNT OF
THE STORM SPREADS EASTWARD.

STORM TOTAL SNOWFALL REPORTS AS OF LATE AFTERNOON WERE IN THE 15
TO 25 INCH RANGE FROM CASTLE ROCK ACROSS EASTERN ADAMS AND
ARAPAHOE COUNTIES INTO EASTERN WELD COUNTY...WITH 5 INCHES IN FORT
MORGAN. FURTHER EAST THE HEAVY SNOW WAS JUST BEGINNING.

Just reading this makes me COLD!

Man they are just getting slammed, I knew that storm that I drove through last Friday in East and Southeast Colorado was just the tip of the iceberg. Gonna be one hell of a winter this year I think.

I'm just happy that I'm not driving any more!

Those Colorado eastern plains snow storms were a real PITA. I'd rather be in the mountains. At least CDOT had the equipment on hand to keep the roads passable, or enough sense to close them completely.

Getting stuck out on the plains in the middle of no where was NOT my idea of a good time.

Oh man you know they have those snow fences that take care of every thing. I agree though. The plains make it harder for me to see the road when the wind is howling. Haven't done a lot of blizzard driving. Quite a bit on ice and that is bad enough. Only secret I ever found was to try and keep the heck away from every one else. I'd rather drive 50 alone on black ice than 10 surrounded by people with white knuckles. Good luck to all you fools-oops good old boys and girls who got stuck in the muck.

Well, sometimes you just have to learn by experience. In my case, I didn't have a "trainer" and it was long before I ever heard of any trucker's forums that gave out good info.

I spend 21 hrs stuck in Limon, Colo. overnight because of this storm, there was absolutely no reason for the highway to be closed for 22 hrs.

Striker obviously you haven't been driving for 13 yrs or if so not done any winter driving.

You are not understanding that the wind blowing the snow around causes 0 visibility. And when I say 0 visibility I mean nada, nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are a lot of times when the weather might not be that bad in the truck stop but out on the open plains it still sucks.
I can assure you that the DOT does not keep the roads closed just special to piss Striker off. They have far more important things to do than to try and piss you off.

Big Don.......... better to be a "wuss" than a dead macho billy big rigger.

I hope you weren't at the TA. Last time I was there got a good dose of food poison. And I ordered off the menu so I wouldn't get sick off buffet. So much for my medical future. I'll starve to get to Johnson's Corner next time. They'll get you going pretty soon. Not much anyone can do about a freak storm like this one.
