Accident closes major intersection

Accident closes major intersection

Livingston Daily, MI
The intersection of Highland Road (M-59) and Grand River Avenue in Howell Township was closed Wednesday afternoon after a 500-pound air conditioner fell from a semi-truck, crashing into a car.
The accident, which occurred at about 1:40 p.m., caused Freon to spill on the roadway. The Howell Area Fire Department was on scene for the environmental cleanup, which caused the intersection to be closed for about an hour.
Traffic slowly began moving through the area a couple of hours later but was still slow as of 5:40 p.m., police said.

Bezotte said a 1995 Chrysler Concorde was waiting to make a left-hand turn from Grand River Avenue to M-59 when a 1999 Kenworth flatbed semi turning eastbound on Grand River Avenue lost its load.

The 500-pound air conditioner — about 6 feet by 4 feet — fell off the truck, which belongs to Pontiac-based Lee Industrial, and hit the front end of the Concorde, causing minor damage, Bezotte said. Police cited the semi driver, DeWayne Pokorny, 46, of Allen Park, for having an unsecured load. Neither Pokorny nor the Concorde driver, Carolyn Coselman, 40, of Fowlerville, were injured in the accident.

Apparently the driver was quoted after the accident as saying:

"Duh, me not no what chains is. Do you? What is strap, how it work?"

Sheez, it reminds me of an accident where a flatbed lost a coil going through a cashbox (on I-294), later the cops found that the driver had only put TWO chains on it. Even I, who know nothing about flatbedding, figured that was a bad plan.

This was one of my reason not to take the job working for arrow trucking as I quit them after the classes. I had already had one rollover and was not going to have another one when they were going to release me to a truck by myself after the third day without any real flatbed training...

Its idiots that don't know how to secure that give the rest of us a bad name and put more and more stupid gooberment regs on us.

In over 3 years I have not had a bit of cargo fall off my trailer. There simply is no call for unsecured cargo.
