Couple Flown To Hospital After Van Slams Into Semi

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Two people were in the hospital Friday morning after their van crashed into a stopped semi-truck. Investigators said the driver never slowed down at a red light and slammed right into the back of the semi.

It's hard to believe anyone survived the crash. It was a crash so bad that firefighters had to cut a couple out of their van after the driver slammed into the back of semi stopped at a red light on Sandlake Road

"The tractor trailer driver said he didn't hear any brakes, he just felt a huge hit and the truck started moving forward so they probably didn't even slow down," said Sandra Bailey of the Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver was flown to the hospital in serious condition. Her passenger was hurt, too. The hood of their van was pushed all the way under the semi's bumper.

Investigators said the couple was lucky they ran into a big truck and not a car.

"It probably saved the life of the people who ran into him," Bailey added.

Eyewitness News learned the passenger had been drinking. Investigators are still waiting for toxicology tests on the driver. The man behind the wheel of the semi was not hurt. He drove off and continued his route.
