BOXBOROUGH — A chain-reaction crash on Interstate 495 north, just north of exit 28 in Boxborough, killed the driver of a tractor-trailer truck Friday morning.
The driver’s name has not been released.
According to a release from the state police, at about 6:40 a.m., the driver of a 1998 Toyota Camry lost control while heading north. The driver of a 1997 Mitsubishi Galant, who was directly behind the Toyota, swerved to avoid a collision. The tractor-trailer driver, in an effort to avoid hitting the Mitsubishi, lost control of his truck, struck a guardrail and rolled down the embankment into the woods.
The driver was declared dead at the scene.
The driver of the Mitsubishi and his three passengers were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Toyota was unhurt, police said.
The highway’s northbound lanes were closed until 8:20 a.m. when the left lane was reopened. The truck will remain in place until Saturday morning, when efforts will resume to move it from the woods.
The crash remains under investigation. The Boxborough Fire Department and EMS, and Littleton Fire Department and EMS assisted at the scene.
