Chicago Sun-Times, IL

A truck driver trainee suffered “minor injuries” when a semi truck hauling 26,000 pounds of window glass crashed and burst into flames Wednesday morning on the Stevenson Expressway (I-55) near Joliet.

The crash occurred just before 2 a.m. when a semi truck traveling south on the Stevenson Expressway drove off the roadway to the right, striking a concrete construction barrier near U.S. Route 52, according to Illinois State Police Joliet District Master Sgt. Cheryl Lisy.

The truck continued traveling south and struck the bridge support to the U.S. Route 52 overpass before it burst into flames. Two men inside the truck’s cab -- a truck driver and a trainee -- escaped before the truck was totally destroyed, Lisy said.

The trainee was taken to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet with non-life-threatening injuries and the driver was uninjured, Lisy said.

“Apparently, they were able to get out on their own before the fire really took off,’’ she said.

The truck, which did not flip over, was hauling 26,000 pounds of window glass, she said.
