Bus Carrying Pa. Students Hits Truck

Bus Carrying Pa. Students Hits Truck

Quote:
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A bus carrying high school students to a band competition struck a tractor-trailer early Thursday, injuring dozens and closing a stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike for hours.
State police and medical personnel at the scene told KYW radio that 30 people were hurt but most of the injuries appeared to be minor.
The bus was taking students and others from Elizabeth Forward High School in the Pittsburgh suburb of Elizabeth to the Tournament of Bands Weekend in Wildwood, N.J., said Jane Milner, a school district spokeswoman.
The bus ran into the rear of a tractor-trailer shortly after 4:30 a.m. between Morgantown and Downingtown, state police said. The site is in Chester County some 35 miles west of Philadelphia.
Both eastbound and westbound lanes of the turnpike were closed to provide access routes for emergency vehicles and landing areas for helicopters. Both lanes had reopened by about 8:15 a.m.

i heard this first thing this morning. they started out just outside of Pittsburgh. they are changing the story now to make it look like the truck drivers fault. they are now saying he was backing up and it's his fault for the accident. i just knew this would happen after i heard a big truck was involved. here's the latest....[LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link. ...

There's no way that there would be as little damage as there was to the bus and trailer if the truck had been stopped/backing up and the bus was travelling at 60 mph (as was stated in the other story). The bus and trailer would be a total crumpled mess.

The other story estimates the truck was going 40 mph and the bus was going 60. The damage in that picture looks to be what would happen if there was only a 20 mph difference in speed, not 60+!

this driver is so screwed. at first he's sitting on the side of the highway then backing up and now traveling at a different speed than the truck. they are so trying to place the blame on the truck driver. all of it makes no sense though. look at the placemant of the rear trailer tires. it's on the white line.

I think the bus driver either dozed off, was flat out not paying attention, or completely misjudged the speed and position of the truck. There's no way that truck was stopped when it was hit, that bus would have been torn to pieces and there would have been definite fatalities.

i totally agree. the damage was pretty minumil since it could have been alot worse. there is no telling right now what exactly happened. it happened in the witchin hours of the night when the body is wanting sleep.

Question to the truckers here...

I heard that the truck was pulling back onto the roadway traveling at 40 mph and the bus, going 60 mph, wasn't able to avoid it. But it appears that the truck was almost entirely on the shoulder. I don't go 40 mph on the shoulder in my car. Would a truck be traveling at that speed on the shoulder of the road? I find that pretty incredulous.

It will be interesting to see what the police report reveals. Or, in your experience as truckers, do you think that will be biased? I'm just curious...

Thanks!
