Motorcyclist Killed When Handlebar Hits Big Rig

Motorcyclist Killed When Handlebar Hits Big Rig

Quote:
CBS) BUENA PARK, Calif. A motorcyclist whose handlebar struck a big rig while he straddled traffic lanes on Beach Boulevard was killed Thursday when he veered into a car, then back into the path of the truck, police said.

Police were called at 7:49 a.m. to the area of Beach and Artesia boulevards, where the motorcyclist was pronounced dead, said Buena Park police Sgt. Gary Worrall.

The motorcyclist, later identified as Brandon Garcia, 23, of Irvine, was riding between lanes while going south when his handlebar struck the tractor trailer driven by David Bonilla, 38, of Santa Ana.

The motocycle then veered into a Mercedes-Benz driven by Andrew Campos, 48, of La Mirada, and bounced back into the path of the big rig, which dragged the rider for a brief period, Worrall said.

No one else was injured, the sergeant said, adding that the accident was under investigation.

For those truckers that have seen this dangerous practice, it is LEGAL for a motorcyclist to navigate in-between lanes (in California), as long as the speed of the motorcycle does not exceed the posted speed limit or does not exceed 15MPH above the speed of the moving traffic. So think twice before you decide to "close the gap" between lanes of traffic to cut-off a motorcyclist performing this dangerous; but LEGAL maneuver.

Actually, it's not half as dangerous as sitting between a bunch of stopped cages that may or may not be paying attention. Not to mention, every bike rolling between the lanes is another 10-15 feet you can move up.

Other states are starting to get wise to the benefits of lane-splitting, so you'll be seeing this outside of CA before too long.

it' legal until something happens like this then it's illegal and so far no state has legalize lane splitting or even talk about doing it former member of ABATE
