Semi caught on fire on I 70

BYERS – Authorities were forced to close westbound I-70 for several hours after two semi-trucks crashed overnight, killing one person.

Colorado State Patrol says the crash happened at about 2:15 a.m. when a semi hauling floor products rear-ended a semi hauling meat.

Authorities say the semi hauling floor products burst into flames upon impact, killing the driver. His identity was not immediately released.

The driver of the semi hauling meat was not injured, according to troopers.

I-70 was shut down between Deer Trail and Byers for about eight hours, reopening shortly after 10 a.m. Authorities had to remove the charred debris before the interstate could reopen.

I seen this, it was just East of Watkins Colorado. By the time I drove by it (7:45 am), it had burnt to the point that you could barely tell it was a truck. I had a feeling whoever was in it didn't live.

I was stuck at Golden with an overweight beer load for about 7 hours last night, and when I left, I drove to the Tomahawk and went to bed. That was just before 2:00am. Had I decided to keep driving, I probably would have been at the scene about the same exact time it happened. Glad I decided to go to bed.

I'll pass this spot in about 5 hrs, think I'll stop and offer a prayer for this guy that was killed. Just reminds me that this can be a dangerous business we're in. How many times have I driven over that same spot in the middle of the night? (1-2 times a week) Makes ya stop and think, huh?
