Fiery Big Rig Crash Closes Hwy 99, Releases Toxic Cloud

Fiery Big Rig Crash Closes Hwy 99, Releases Toxic Cloud

Quote:
The wreckage of a fiery big rig crash keeps part of Highway 99 closed Tuesday afternoon as crews keep an eye on a dangerous chemical that already released a toxic cloud.
It all started just south of Earlimart on Highway 99 and Avenue 24 around 9pm Monday night, after a fiery crash between a big rig and a car.

Crews are repairing the road in the area. It took hours for them to remove the semi-truck from the scene.
You can see in the video from overnight the flames from just after the accident. The big rig was carrying a powdered insecticide and a toxic cloud drifted towards Delano after the crash. But, no evacuations were ordered because the accident happened in an area where there are no homes.
As crews continue to do street repairs, northbound traffic is being diverted onto Road 144 then onto Road 56 and then back onto Highway 99. Highway patrol officials still don't know when it will be completely cleared.

Wow, I'm usually on the 99 between Bakersfield and Fresno on Monday nights, usually between 6 and 10 PM. What a coincidence that I went down into L.A. this week instead. Just got home a couple of hours ago and read this. First I'd heard...
