Truck wheels causing wrecks

Truck wheels causing wrecks

A string of Seattle-area crashes caused by loose truck wheels has officials in the U.S. and Canada investigating the scale of the problem.
Washington highways have seen a rash of wrecks this year caused by wheels and tires that have broken off commercial trucks. At least six incidents have occurred in and around Seattle since May 1, including a wreck in Kirkland on Monday, just after midnight.
In that incident, a Safeway Inc. driver narrowly escaped injury when his water truck hit an errant semi-truck wheel. The wreck caused a 10-mile backup on Interstate 405.
On May 11, Bothell resident John Ellis, 31, was killed while driving through Tukwila when a truck's wheel assembly bounced onto the SUV he was riding in.
Two weeks later, another set of wheels crushed the passenger side of Tacoma resident Sung Shin's car on Interstate 90 in Issaquah, just missing the 19-year-old.
Officials with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance -- the association of state and federal officials from Canada, Mexico and the United States that helps make trucking safety standards -- launched a preliminary inquiry after the string of wrecks, said Steve Keppler, policy director for the Washington, D.C.-based organization.
