Runaway Truck Ramps Help Keep Interstate 70 Safer Runaway Truck Ramps Help Keep Interstate 70 Safer 7/12/07 Quote: JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo -- A 51-year-old Utah man was killed Wednesday night when the semi-truck he was driving veered out of control on Interstate 70 in Mt. Vernon Canyon, crashed, then caught fire. The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, was just a few hundred yards away from a runaway truck ramp. There are five such ramps along I-70, one at mile marker 182 (Lower Vail Pass), one at mile marker 185.5 (Upper Vail Pass), one at mile marker 209 (Lower Straight Creek), one at mile marker 212 (Upper Straight Creek) and one at mile marker 257 (Mount Vernon). The Colorado Department of Transportation says those ramps were used 113 times from 2001 to 2004. Trucker Charles Johnson says he's never had to use a ramp. "No sir, I have not.
