5 killed in fiery I-526 crash

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. --

At least five people were killed Friday afternoon when an 18-wheeler collided with several cars on Interstate 526 in rush hour traffic, causing a fiery wreck, state troopers said.

The crash happened when the tractor-trailer ran into the back of another vehicle in the westbound lands of I-526, about two miles west of I-26, Highway Patrol Cpl. Paul Brouthers said.
The crash caused other wrecks, and eventually at least eight vehicles were involved, with some of them ending up under the 18-wheeler, Brouthers said.
The 18-wheeler and at least one other vehicle burned after the crash and the fire was so intense it melted a light pole on the side of the highway, The (Charleston) Post and Courier reported.
The coroner's office has confirmed at least five deaths, although investigators continued to look through the wreckage late Friday night, Brouthers said.
"We don't know if that's going to be the total number of fatalities," Brouthers said.
The bodies were found in three different vehicles and none of the families of the victims had been notified late Friday, Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten told the Charleston newspaper.
"It's very important that we take our time," Wooten said. "We are proceeding with all the reasonable speed we can."
At least four people, including the driver of the 18-wheeler, were taken to hospitals, but Brouthers said their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
Several other people were able to walk away from the wreck, troopers said.
The westbound lanes of I-526 are expected to be closed into the early morning as investigators sift through the wreckage and a special team of troopers tries to figure out exactly what happened.
