Big rig spills onions

Five injured as big rig spills onions in crash in Coachella; seven vehicles damaged

CA

10/2/07

Quote:

COACHELLA - A big rig carrying a load of onions lost control on a Coachella highway Tuesday, injuring five people as it plowed into a line of cars stopped at a red light, officials said.

Onions spilled all over the intersection of Expressway 86 and Avenue 52 after the 9:09 a.m. wreck, which shut down a three-mile section of the southbound 86 for almost two hours, according to Riverside County sheriff's officials.

The chain-reaction collision started when the truck's driver, who was not identified, failed to stop for the cars waiting at the intersection's light, said sheriff's Deputy Herlinda Valenzuela. After slamming into one car, six more vehicles were struck as the truck continued across the other side of the road, through a set of bushes and into a field, Valenzuela said.

"They were everywhere," she said of the onions. "If you followed the trail, you can tell which way the truck went."
