Drivers Still Missing In LA Tunnel Fire

An update to the story. Looks like some of the people just fled, and left the scene. Now they have more trucks than they have drivers accounted for. 31 vehicles, only one of them was a car, so this one really can't be blamed on the 4 wheelers.

Thumbs up

They ought to be able to track down owners and find out who was behind the wheel. A lot of illegals here in DFW take off after wrecks. Luckily most of them are driving cars or pickups. Still can't understand how that many vehicles can get in such a pileup if they aren't playing NASCAR driver.

Trucker's phone call may be clue he's among dead in I-5 pileup

10/16/07
A friend tells of a frantic call from Ricardo Cibrian that he was caught in the tunnel -- and then the line went dead. Today, his wife is said to be heading to Mexico to retrieve his dental records.
Trucker Ricardo Cibrian was in a jam. He had just collided into the rear end of a semi-truck in front of him and was immediately hit from behind by another vehicle. He could see that the truck he hit had struck another and that they were both on fire.
Cibrian called a friend from his cellphone to report the accident and to say he was trapped in his truck. The friend told him to try to break the window.

That particular tunnel is a bear. All it takes is one slip up there, and the whole thing is jammed for hours. It's happened there before, and it will happen there again. This is just the worst one that has happened so far.

I had two theories on this . .

. . and I emailed and tried to call the reporters of the L. A. Times version of this story for clarification. I got no response. It really ticked me off that they bought the "just walked away" scenario.

Either they were illegals and made a hasty departure or 9 truck drivers were cremated in that tunnel. The forensic work will have to solve that puzzel.
