| Trucker Peels Back Roof Of Box Truck At Miami County Railroad Overpass Trucker Peels Back Roof Of Box Truck At Miami County Railroad Overpass 10/28/07 Quote: MIAMI COUNTY, Ohio -- A Piqua man, driving a box truck he borrowed from a family member to move some personal belongings, came to an abrupt stop after he failed to get a 12-1/2 foot high truck under a 9-foot 8-inch clearance at a railroad overpass.
It happened Sunday afternoon at the railroad bridge over Eldean Road north of Troy.
Tony Rowley, 37, of Piqua was somewhat embarrassed as Troy Fire Department paramedics attended to a forehead laceration Rowley suffered, repeating that he was familiar with the underpass and just forgot the low clearance.
Rowley told deputies he was traveling 40 to 45 mph when the crash happened.
Large signs on both sides of the bridge, other signage and even flashing yellow lights warn motorists that the clearance under the railroad bridge is only 9-feet 8-inches.
Thanks to seat belts worn by Rowley and his son, Kyle, 4, the two only suffered minor injuries.
Both were treated at Upper Valley Medical Center near Troy.
Rowley was cited by sheriff's deputies for failing to obey a highway warning sign.
If it is any consolation, Rowley should not feel bad. He is not the only person who has attempted to squeeze a truck, higher than the bridge opening, under the overpass in recent years.
The impact of the crash moved one end of the bridge structure three-quarters of an inch.
