18-wheeler kills toddler in Portland

PORTLAND — PORTLAND -- A toddler died Friday after wandering from his home early Friday morning and being hit by an 18-wheeler.
Police aren't sure how Jeremy Lopez, 2, got out of his home in the 400 block of Lang Road, before finding his way into the street and being hit around 3:30 a.m. Friday in the 1500 block of Wildcat Drive, officials said.
Jeremy was living with his grandmother and mother at the Lang Road address, police said.

Heavy fog was a factor in the accident, said Cpl. Thomas Laughlin, a Portland Police Department detective investigating the accident.
No charges were filed against the driver, he said. The truck, which was making deliveries for Keebler Co., was released back to the company.
Police had not formally interviewed family members about the incident as of Friday night to give them time to grieve, said Police Chief Randy Wright. Authorities likely would begin interviews this weekend or early next week, he said.
Custody of Jeremy was assigned to his grandmother after Child Protective Services had contact with his mother in June 2006, officials said. Corpus Christi police contacted the agency at that time as Jeremy's mother was being arrested and marijuana was found, said John Lennan, spokesman for Department of Family and Protective Services.
"His mother did a voluntary placement at that time with her mother in Portland," Lennan said. The agency has had no contact with the family since, except the boy's mother was offered and accepted counseling services, Lennan said.

That poor little boy didn't have a chance. I've noticed a trend of parents now a days, who just let their kids do whatever, and they ignore them. This poor little fella probably got out of his toddler bed, and wandered outside, while his mamma and grandma where getting stoned, or whatever they do. It does say that in 2006, "as Jeremy's mother was being arrested and marijuana was found."
I know no one probably want's to hear this..... but this whole me first generation needs to wake up, and take care of their kids. I understand, that yes, I was born into this generation, but I don't see myself as being even a fraction as egocentric as these parents with the dope around their kids. Whatever happened to having a kid, and changing your life for the better for that kid?
I do have kids..... I haven't seen my little boy since Jan. and I've never got to meet my little girl who was born in August..... but this is because my wife took off while I was on the road, and left me for her boyfriend in Texas. I want my kids..... I want to see them, hear them, play with them, teach them, watch them have fun being kids...... I love my kids, and I don't get any of those opportunities because they live so far away, and my wife is selfish. It really pisses me off when I see or hear about someone who has kids, and does or sales drugs.
and as it also says, "Jeremy was living with his grandmother and mother at the Lang Road address, police said." thus he was still with his druggy mom.
People who do drugs and have kids are selfish. Kids should always come first. If you want to do drugs and you don't have kids, then whatever I don't give a damn, but when you have kids, and you continue to do drugs..... wtf? She obviously wasn't watching him very well either. Maybe I am overly protective, but I used to check on my little boy multliple times at night.
I cannot even fathom a scenario where she would have any kind of an excuse whatsoever for her not to know her little boy wasn't in the house.
The me first generation sucks ###. The child should be egocentric not the parent. It's normal for a child to be egocentric...... ADULTS SHOULD BE MATURE ENOUGH TO CARE FOR THIER KIDS.
Ok, enough venting. Sorry people.

That assumption that his grandparents were getting stoned is the most absurd statement I have read in a long time.
I have had a friend's daughter (4 years old) wander away while his parents slept; neither one was "using". She even had learned how to unlock the doors. Luckily, it happened in a small town and the police found her with-in minutes.

you do realize that the article states, that the mother was arrested for drugs, and lost custody, and then it states that the mother lived with the son..... so maybe the grandma wasn't "using," but I about guarentee the mother still was, and that didn't help matters any better. I wake up if I hear a door open, but perhaps that just me.

I agree completely I have two kids who are teenagers now and they NEVER EVER got up out of bed and wandered around the house at night. EVER!!! And if they DID wake, up, I heard them long before they even THOUGHT of getting out of bed. It's called baby monitors and 2 yrs old is plenty young enough to still be using them.

What the heck was a 2 yr old doing up and about at 3:00 a.m.?!?!?!?!!! If a kid does get up in the middle of the night, you'd think he'd/she'd go get mommy or something, not wander out of the house.

Mom was still living with the kid?? Ugh!!! That whole situation is just wrong.

If you're going to have kids, grow up and raise them properly!!!! Or give them up to someone who will!!!
