Man killed in crash with semi; truck driver rescued from burning cab

OAKRIDGE, Ore. – An Alabama man was killed Tuesday morning after the vehicle he was driving crossed into the opposite lane on Highway 58 and collided with a commercial truck, police said.

The truck's driver was pulled to safety by another commercial driver after the truck caught fire.

A Nissan Pathfinder driven by 23-year-old Marchbank Ashton Felchin II, from Gulf Shores, Alabama, was westbound on the highway, rounding a sweeping left curve when his car crossed into the eastbound lane.

That put him directly into the path of a Freightliner pulling a flatbed semi-trailer, said Oregon State Police Sgt. Lang Hinkle.

The truck driver, Jerry Dean Smith, 55, steered to the right shoulder to avoid the Nissan but both vehicles collided nearly head-on.

The impact caused the Nissan to spin around to the north shoulder where it rolled at least once. Felchin was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Freightliner truck and semi-trailer overturned, trapping Smith inside the cab as it caught fire. Maynard M. McCaul, from Junction City, stopped, kicked out a window and pulled Smith to safety, police said.

Smith was transported to the hospital.

The crash occurred about 12 miles east of Oakridge.

Speed may have been a contributing factor in the crash, according to police.
