The Honda slammed directly into the rear of the big rig

The Honda slammed directly into the rear of the big rig

San Luis Obispo Tribune, CA
Quote:
A Goleta man was killed on Highway 101 in Santa Barbara County early this morning after driving into the back of a semi-truck during a high-speed pursuit.
About 1:50 a.m., two CHP officers patrolling in a car on northbound 101 saw a gray Honda CRV enter the highway from Mission Street in Santa Barbara just ahead of them. The Honda immediately drove into the fast lane and accelerated to 85-90 mph, according to CHP officials. When the officers turned on their car's red emergency lights to stop the Honda, the driver sped up to 110-120 mph.
The Honda drove at that speed from Highway 154 to Glen Annie Road, a distance of about seven miles, according to the CHP. The officers followed directly behind the Honda with their lights and sirens on.
About a half-mile north of Glen Annie Road, the Honda suddenly moved to the slow lane. The Honda's driver did not brake for a 1994 Freightliner tractor-trailer that was about 300 feet ahead, the CHP said. The Honda slammed directly into the rear of the big rig at approximately 110-120 mph.
The driver, Ryan Nicholas Hofmann, 20 of Santa Barbara, was killed instantly. The driver of the tractor-trailer, Juan Jose Flores, 47 of Bakersfield, was not injured. Flores was driving from Southern California to San Luis Obispo to pick up a load of cargo.
There was no one else in either vehicle.
Due to the unusual circumstances of the event, the CHP and the Santa Barbara County Coroner's Department are trying to find out if Hofmann committed suicide, according to the CHP.
