High Winds topple semi trucks

KTVB, ID
1/4/08
Wind gusts powerful enough to blow over semi-trucks forced the closure of an 82-mile stretch of Interstate-84 Friday morning, ODOT officials said.

wow. i must confess this is and always has been one of my biggest concerns. it doesn't matter how good you looked that truck over or how long you have been driving or anything in your power you can do about it. if it is gonna happen then it will happen. one of those uncontrollable situations per say.

Were these all empty trucks??? I can see it with empties - our bridge is closed sometimes to empties but full trucks? Wow, that's some wind.

Anyone know what the speed of the wind was???

Wow!!!!!!!

In SE WY we can get a lot of wind. STRONG at times. I've seen 5 trucks on their side in a 1/4 mile stretch that is a wind tunnel. I've seen parked trailers (unhooked) blown over. I was witness to a very long RV trailer blow over right in front of me on the interstate.

Pulling a van DOES NOT pay good enough for me to take these risks.

Because of the wind the Wal Mart DC in Loveland CO has certain trailers that have 10,000 lbs of ballast in them. And they only go on certain routes into WY.

Brickman, I agree on the "wind tunnel" area... you talking about I 25 near the south POE???

Heck what was it 1999 or 2000 when the Citgo lost the canopy onto the 2 trucks, I worked 7 rollovers from state line to Lincoln way exit in one day when I drove tow truck there (south greeley highway, but they are not in business anymore.)

From the looks of the pictures they most likely were lightly loaded and on Cabbage... It has some strong winds in that area and with the curves being just right around the canyons I bet it was wild up there... Heck it looks like 3 of them were within 1/4 mile of the view point there...

They were loaded trucks.
I got out of there Thursday night. Some friends got stuck on the other side Friday morning.

Alot of wind there this week. The section between Wamsutter and Rawlins was terrible.

That's the normal route I drive - I84 EB and WB, Boise to Portland and back - and I was so glad I wasn't there that day. I got back in on Thursday morning, so I was sitting at home hoping my house would hold together. I remember a few instances on my last run where I was blown from lane to lane, and I was loaded both directions.

To make matters worse, Thurs night. They closed 1-84 at ex 265 for 2 hours for a wreck. At least dinner was relaxed.
