| Rig touches live wire, killing Mercer-area trucker Rig touches live wire, killing Mercer-area trucker 1/9/08 Sharon Herald, PA Quote:
A 58-year-old Mercer-area man was electrocuted Wednesday morning when the raised trailer of his semi-truck touched high voltage lines in Jefferson County.
David L. Haynie of West Market Street was killed at about 9:50 a.m., state police in Punxsutawney said.
Jefferson County Coroner Bernie Snyder said Haynie died instantly.
“It just was an unfortunate accident,” Punxsutawney Fire Chief Paul Hense said.
When authorities arrived, the trailer was still raised and in contact with a power line, which was pushed into another line that carries about 7,200 volts, according to Penelec Area Manager John Shimko.
The lines were still arcing, creating blue sparks between the trailer and the lines.
The truck also caught fire, but because of the wires firefighters couldn’t get close enough to put out the blaze.
Penelec crews arrived at about 11:10 a.m. and de-energized the line, allowing the firefighters to move in.
Hense said once they were allowed in, firefighters knocked down the fire in a matter of minutes.
The fire did not spread, something Hense attributed to the location of the truck, which was mainly on pavement and gravel. And the ground was wet after Tuesday night’s rain storms.
Shimko said normally, when a vehicle comes into contact with a live wire, if the individual stays in the vehicle, tires act as an insulator. However, details of Wednesday’s incident are still unavailable.
