SUV driver dies in head-on I-55 crash

SUV driver dies in head-on I-55 crash

A Joliet man was killed when he lost control of his sport-utility vehicle on Interstate Highway 55 near Plainfield, crossed the median and was hit by an oncoming semi-trailer truck, state police said this morning.

The crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. Sunday just south of Illinois Highway 126 after Eugene Gatewood, 33, lost control of his SUV for an unknown reason, said Master Sgt. Cheryl Lisy.

The southbound vehicle hit the median barrier and went airborne into the northbound lanes where a semi-trailer truck slammed into it.

"Witnesses indicated that he went airborne and hit the front end of the cab area of the semi-trailer," Lisy said.

The truck driver, a 44-year-old LaPorte, Ind., resident, was taken to Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet with non-life threatening injuries, the master sergeant said.

Gatewood, who lived in the 1000 block of Highland Avenue of Joliet, was pronounced dead at the scene. Lisy would not comment on why police think Gatewood may have lost control of his vehicle.

"Obviously we're going to be looking at all possibilities and speed would be included," Lisy said this morning. "We're still in the very preliminary stages of this investigation."

The crash cleanup and investigation closed all southbound and northbound lanes for about three hours. Traffic backups were cleared several hours later, according to Lisy.

The Will County coroner's office could not immediately provide information.
