MIDDLESEX COUNTY — Mar- garet Eastmond clutched a piece of jewelry and wept as she watched a Texas truck driver get sentenced to three years in prison for killing her daughter by making an illegal left-hand turn across Route 1.

When it was her turn to speak, the Hazlet woman unleashed her grief over the death of 24-year-old Victoria Eastmond.
"You hit my little girl so hard, they couldn't make her look like herself anymore," she told truck driver through her tears. "I didn't get to see her one more time because she was irreparable. I want you to think of her every day."
The driver, Willie E. Houston, 61, listened attentively and dabbed his cheeks with a tissue as she spoke. He had already apologized.
"I'm very sorry about it. It's something you can't get back. You can't get another life back," he said before his voice faltered. "Someone said I showed no remorse. I was wrong."
"She was my daughter, my friend and my confidant," Margaret Eastmond said, crying throughout her statement. "The day she was killed, my world ended." The jewelry she held, a bracelet with small bells dangling from it, was her daughter's prized keepsake.
