CP train splits semi in two

CP train splits semi in two: Police say trucker didn’t see train coming
1/19/08
Winona Daily News, MN
Quote:
GOODVIEW, Minn — A Canadian Pacific train heading east from Minnesota City split a semi in two at the 69th Avenue crossing Friday morning.

The accident happened shortly after 7 a.m. when a semi, driven by James Christopher Shank, 39, of Dixon, Ill., failed to stop for the oncoming train, despite railroad signs, a stop and the train’s horns, according to Goodview police.

The train hit the semi, cutting it in two, leaving the tractor on one side of the tracks and the trailer, full of plastic pellets, on the other side.

The pellets, white plastic beads that blended in with the snow, are used for injection molding by local company Ticona Celstran. Goodview police said the pellets posed no danger.

The driver told police that he didn’t see or hear the train. Three eyewitnesses agreed, saying it appeared that he didn’t notice the oncoming train. At the same time, a Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern train was on the second set of tracks near the intersection, according to the police report.

If you have railroad signs and a stop, there is very little excuse for having your truck cut in half by a train. This one gets chalked up t driver error. In fact, at least 99% of the time, when there is a truck/train collision, it is driver error. It's not like the train had a chance to swerve and miss him.

Rrx oops

First let me stat-Atruck I drove was hit by a train!!!!! I was at a crossing off the 105 in L.A. The landing gear on the trailer became hung on the rail, the crossing was clear. While trying to decide how to get this darn thing loose, a bystander saw the train approch at yard speed . I got my now ex-wife out of the truck and cleared the area with the utmost possible speed , in other words I got the flock out of there!!!!!!!! The train, in full emergency Braking still travled 1700 feet before it stopped too bad my truck was only 1500 feet when he did stop. no freight damage, no ticket, one tore in two 48' trailer , no one injured. Nothing ever said by company.
