Big rig accident shuts down I-205 for hours

Big rig accident shuts down I-205 for hours
1/23/08
Tri-Valley Herald, CA
Quote:
TRACY — A big rig that drove up the back of a car-carrier forced the closure of westbound Interstate 205 for much of the day Tuesday, backing up traffic for miles in both directions.

Shortly before 9:30 a.m., a truck registered to a Fremont company was traveling at about 45 mph in the No. 2 lane when traffic came to a sudden stop near the Tom Payne Slough undercrossing, California Highway Patrol Officer Robert Rickman said.
The truck moved left into the No. 1 lane, where traffic again slowed about
15 seconds later. Unable to stop in time, the big rig drove up the back of a Peterbilt truck based in Stockton hauling an empty car-carrier, Rickman said.
"It's lucky he didn't have any cars on the carrier or any motorists between them," Rickman said. "He just drove into an open space. It could have been a lot worse if a car came loose because of the impact and gone into the opposing lanes of traffic."
No one was injured in the accident and alcohol was not a factor, Rickman said.
The truck was hauling about 40,000 pounds of car parts, Tracy Fire officials said.
One of the big rig's fuel tanks was ruptured, spilling about 40 gallons of fuel onto the roadway and forcing the CHP to shut down the freeway, investigators said.
Traffic from Interstate 5 to I-205 was diverted to the I-205 business loop, which impacted 11th Street through Tracy for much of the day and slowed freeway traffic as far back as Lathrop Road. Eastbound I-205 lanes
of traffic were backed up beyond the Tracy Boulevard exit, a distance of nearly six miles.

Both vehicles were slowly towed — about a quarter-mile — off the bridge to prevent damage before being separated on firm ground, CHP officials said. I-205 was reopened shortly after 3 p.m.
