A trucker who state police said was driving a rig with bad brakes when he smashed into a car on Route 581 in Lower Allen Twp. in July 2006 will stand trial on a charge of involuntary manslaughter in Cumberland County Court.

Michael Dean Lash, 42, of the 7800 block of Chambers Hill Road, Swatara Twp., waived a preliminary hearing today before District Judge Richard S. Doughtery, who forwarded the case to the county court. Lash's court arraignment is set for April 15, and he remains free on $25,000 unsecured bail.
Lash also is charged by state police with homicide by vehicle, reckless driving, driving at an unsafe speed, failing to drive within a single lane of traffic and related charges.

Police said Lash's tractor-trailer had defective rear brakes, including six out-of-service violations involving its brakes and cargo, and the truck's documentation was completed without an inspection.
Lash was driving east on Route 581 when his rig crashed into a car driven by Samuel Maravich Jr., shoving the car over a 3-foot concrete wall and off a bridge crossing Hummel Avenue, 18th Street and the Norfolk Southern Corp. railroad tracks, police said.

Police said Maravich''s 1996 Lincoln was dragged about 100 feet by the tractor-trailer before plunging off of the bridge and falling 30 feet to the street below. The car landed on its roof, and Maravich, 58, of 61st Street in Swatara Twp., was declared dead at the scene, authorities said.
The rig also struck two other cars and pushed one of them into a third car, police said. The drivers of those cars were not injured.
