SPRINGVILLE - A 22-year-old Springville woman suffered life-threatening injuries when the car she was driving spun out of control and was hit by an oncoming semi-trailer truck this morning, leaving the mangled car on the side of the road and the semi in a farm field.

Erin Daman was westbound on Secrist Road near Oxley Road about 8:45 a.m. when she lost control and was struck broadside by the eastbound grain truck, driven by Arthur Dunkel, 33, of Cedar Rapids, according to the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.

Both drivers were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, and Daman was later transferred to University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Daman was wearing her seat belt but had “life-threatening injuries,” according to the sheriff’s office. Dunkel was treated and released.

Deputy Sheriff Rob Taylor said it appears road conditions were a factor. Drizzle and fog was limiting visibility in the area.

The road near the accident scene remained closed until after 12:30 p.m., as authorities cleaned up the scene. Taylor said authorities were reconstructing the accident. The accident remains under investigation.
