Pickup Driver Found Alive After Garbage Truck Topples Onto His Cab

LAKELAND | A man was pulled alive this afternoon from underneath 36-ton garbage truck carrying about 13 tons of garbage after being trapped for more than an hour in the cab of his pickup truck on State Road 540 at DeCastro Road by the Polk County Landfill.
The pickup driver, whose name has not been released, was found lying across the seat of the 2005 Ford F150 pickup truck owned by Conner Construction Co. of Lakeland.
The left side of the pickup’s cab had been crushed by the larger truck.
He was alert when he was loaded into an ambulance for the ride to a hospital at 2:35 p.m. It was not immediately known which hospital he was taken to.
The driver of the garbage truck, whose name has not been released, was freed from the wreckage about 1:50 p.m. and taken to an area hospital.
Westbound SR 540 is down to one lane at the turn into the landfill. The access road to the Polk Parkway was closed for a time but reopened about 2:45 p.m. DeCastro road is closed and garbage trucks are being diverted to a secondary entrance at the landfill.
