Southbound lanes of Interstate 65 are closed in Jasper County following an accident involving two semis. The wreck happened at 6:00 a.m. Friday at the 204 mile marker, about a mile south of the Rensselaer/Remington exit.
State Police said one truck was parked on the side of the interstate, but partially in the right-hand lane. A second truck hit the parked truck. Both drivers had to be extricated from the wreckage.
The parked truck overturned, blocking the right lane and part of the passing lane. The semi that hit that truck went into the median, spreading debris across the roadway.
Police are diverting southbound traffic at the 205 mile marker. Southbound lanes of the interstate were still closed at 11:00 a.m. Friday.
52 year old Jalal A. Atra, of Orland Hills, Illinois, was driving the parked semi. He was taken to Jasper County Hospital with head injuries. 28 year old Jorje Boyas, of River Forest, Illinois, was driving the semi that hit Atra's. Boyas was airlifted to St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields, Illinois, with head, chest, and leg injuries.
