| Truck driver charged with careless driving Crashed truck driver charged with careless driving 2/15/08 Tallahassee Democrat, FL Quote:
The driver of a tractor-trailer that overturned and caught fire Thursday south of Sopchoppy has been charged with careless driving. Richard White, of Tallahassee, was taken to the emergency room after the fiery crash. He was in fair condition today, said Jenna Brown, of Tallahassee Memorial Hospital’s public relations department.
White, 35, was also charged with driving with a suspended license. His tractor-trailer license was suspended indefinitely on Jan. 30 for failure to pay child support.
“Instead of just carefully driving down the road, he did something that caused the crash,” said Lt. Mark Brown of the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at about 9:30 a.m. 6.5 miles south of Sopchoppy. White’s truck was headed south on U.S. 319, hauling a trailer loaded with rocks when he failed to negotiate a curve, according to the crash report. The truck traveled onto the west paved shoulder of the road and overturned when White tried to get back into the southbound lane. The truck came to a rest facing east, blocking both lanes of traffic until 1 p.m.
The careless driving charge carries a $123.50 fine and four driver’s license points. Since 1998, White had been charged with one count of careless driving, failure to obey a traffic signal and unlawful speed, according to his driver’s license. His speed at the time of the crash was not immediately available.
White’s truck belonged to the Duncan Trucking, of Crawfordville, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Managers for Duncan Trucking did not immediately answer a call for comment today. The company’s Web site says the firm has been providing trucking and heavy hauling services in the area since 1990, carrying river rock, dirt, sand and more. The site says the firm services Tallahassee, Crawfordville, Woodville, Havana, Thomasville and Leon, Wakulla and Madison counties.http://www.tallahassee.com/apps/pbcs...GNEWS/80215015 | |
