2 Hurt When Train Hits Big Rig

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A roadway was closed on Tuesday morning after a freight train collided with a big rig.

It happened at Orange Avenue and Landstreet Road in Orange County.

Authorities said the train's conductor was seriously hurt in the crash and transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Workers are trying to clear the wreckage from the crossing and reopen Landstreet Road before rush hour.

Investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol are checking to see if the crossing signals were working properly at the time of the crash. CSX officials checked the signals and found the bells and gates working, but the lights didn't function.

The driver of the big rig said as he approached the crossing around 11 p.m. on Monday, the gates were down and signal was flashing.

Investigators said he stopped and waited for the gates to go back up and lights to stop flashing.

"As he began to travel on to the tracks, he started to hear the notification that the arm bars were coming back down. That's when the train that was coming in a southerly direction struck his cab and actually tipped him over. The cab caught fire briefly, and luckily, he was able to get out," Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Kim Miller said.

The driver of the big rig was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center. He was treated and released. The train's engineer was not hurt.

Drivers can use Sand Lake Road as an alternate route around the scene of the crash. VIDEO here..... http://www.wesh.com/news/15626470/detail.html
