No charges against trucker in death of Portland police officer

No charges against trucker in death of Portland police officer

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- The Washington State Patrol has ruled out charges against a trucker in the death of a Portland, Ore., police officer.

Investigators say 40-year-old Officer Mark "Z-Man" Zylawy was fatally struck in the right lane of Interstate 5 southbound on Jan. 27. He lived near Ridgefield, north of Vancouver, and was going to work when his truck apparently broke down. It was found on the right shoulder with the hood up near the Clark County fairgrounds.

Witnesses say 55-year-old Lawrence Stieben of Milwaukie, Ore., tried to swing his tractor-trailer to the left to avoid Zylawy. The police officer was running toward the shoulder when he was hit.
Trooper David W. Bourland says Stieben didn't do anything wrong. Toxicology tests determined that alcohol and other drugs were not involved.
