A 53-year-old Des Moines man was killed Tuesday morning when a dump truck driven by a co-worker backed over him in a trucking yard.

William T. Rogers died at DeCarlo Demolition, 260 N.E. 44th Ave., where he was unloading and removing dirt about 11:30 a.m.

Rogers, a Seibert Trucking employee, was on his cell phone when a co-worker began to back up the truck, a news release from the Polk County sheriff's office said.

The backup alarm on the truck was functioning, according to the release, and employees at the yard "tried frantically and unsuccessfully to warn both the backing driver" and Rogers.
The truck did not have a spotter because Rogers was not supposed to be out of the truck, said sheriff's office spokesman Neil Shultz.

Shultz declined to identify the truck driver. He said authorities had a pretty clear understanding of the events, but the case remained under investigation. No charges were anticipated against the driver.
