Man Retrieves Dog From Freeway After Wreck

Man Retrieves Dog From Freeway After Wreck

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Thursday afternoon a three-vehicle wreck involving a semi-truck carrying military explosives tied up traffic on Interstate 40 for hours.

Those involved only suffered minor injuries, but the semi-driver could have faced a major loss -- if it hadn't been for a good Samaritan.

The crash created quite a tangle in all directions.

Mark Covalt was heading back to work when he got caught in the snarl. He spotted something unusual: a small dog running along the ramp.

"I thought somebody should do something about that dog. And then I thought, 'Well, I'm somebody,' " said Covalt.

Covalt, with the help of other bystanders and police officers, rounded up the pup and took her home.

"She was very, very stressed. I thought somebody somewhere is going to be crying tonight, and if I could prevent that I ought to," said Covalt.

Besides being shaken up, Covalt wanted to make sure the dog was OK, so he dropped her off at the Sandia Animal Clinic.

"I was very impressed that he helped a little puppy in need," said veterinarian Laurie Horn.

The Corgi mix, named Mary, had some bruises and a broken claw but was otherwise no worse for wear.

Mary's owners -- two people in the semi-truck -- picked her up Friday afternoon. http://www.koat.com/news/15972155/detail.html
