The State Patrol is investigating a deadly crash in Chisago County. Authorities confirm the drivers of the two vehicles involved were killed in the accident.

Highway 8 near James Avenue was reopened early Saturday morning after hours of investigation at the scene of the crash.

The State Patrol website states around 8:00 Friday night, an SUV crossed the center line near James Avenue, striking a semi-truck head on, causing both vehicles to burst into flames.

Witnesses tried but failed to save the driver of the car carrier who could be heard screaming from his vehicle following the crash.

Those witnesses had to give up after flames started to spread and set off a small explosion. Two women ran from the truck as a second larger explosion destroyed the cab of the semi.

The driver of the SUV was an 18-year-old from Shafer, MN and the driver of the semi was a 49-year-old from Phoenix, AZ. The identities of the victims have not yet been released, as the State Patrol contacts their families.

Information will be updated on kare11.com as it is released.

My worst fear of trucking is burning alive in a wreck.

That is a very sad story. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of both drivers involved. Dying at work must be the worst way to go.

"The driver of the SUV was an 18-year-old. . ."

18, 17, 16. Doesn't matter. Looks like he didn't live, but if he had, somebody probably would've rectified that situation promptly.

If anybody does that to me and causes me to die in such a painful way, I will gladly ask permission for a temporary dismissal of entrance into the pearly gates just to come back and haunt the SOB, hopefully causing him to have a heart attack.

I find it amazing that witnesses promptly went to rescue the trucker first and not the teen. Maybe the teen died on impact. He's the lucky one.

Edit: Okay. I think I'm being presumtious here. But it's a generally accepted trend that teen drivers tend to be immature, inexperienced and reckless. Hope I didn't push any buttons. I'll wait to see how this story unfolds.

May he rest in peace. May the girls who tried so hard to get to him find some measure of peace. They cared enough to try.

According to the video the girls glanced into the SUV and didn't see any body. And then went to the driver.

A flatbed truck driven by 51-year-old Elgin Lirette Jr., of Houma, was traveling south near Thomas-Sea’s seafood, police said. The truck was hit head-on by a northbound Toyota pickup truck driven by 21-year-old Jarrod Kiger of Lockport, authorities said.
Neither vehicle had a passenger.
The impact shattered the Toyota’s gasoline tank and damaged two diesel tanks on the flatbed, causing the fuel to spill onto the highway and both vehicles to burst into flames.
Lafourche Fire District No. 3 firefighters put out the fire, which left both drivers severely burned. Both men died at the scene.
District 3 Chief Freddie Guidry said diesel fuel, once ignited, can burn intensely, and the tanks on the flatbed were leaking profusely.
"(Diesel) is hard to get going, but once it gets going, look out," Guidry said.
Guidry said that it is too early to know exactly what caused the fuel to ignite.
"In a wreck like this, you have sparks, you have all kinds of things that can cause ignition," Guidry said.
