| Pedestrian struck, killed by big rig on Highway 99 Pedestrian struck, killed by big rig on Highway 99
5/13/08 Lodi News-Sentinel, CA Quote:
A man died Monday morning after his vehicle broke down on Highway 99 in Lodi and he ran in front of a big rig, the California Highway Patrol said.
The man, who did not have identification on him, apparently stopped his disabled vehicle in the center divide of southbound Highway 99 just north of Turner Road, CHP Officer Adrian Quintero said.
At 4:13 a.m., the man ran west across the highway. He stopped in the middle of the slow lane, staring at a big rig heading toward him.
The big rig's driver, Ronald Nivision, 45, of Sacramento, swerved toward the fast lane to avoid the pedestrian, but the pedestrian suddenly ran back the way he'd come. The truck hit the man, who died at the scene.
Nivision, who was wearing his seat belt and was not injured, was not under the influence, the CHP said. The distraught truck driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers.
Investigators are still looking into whether the pedestrian, who appeared to be in his 30s, owned the vehicle that broke down. As of Monday afternoon, the man had not been identified.
The incident does not appear to be a suicide, Quintero said, based on witness accounts. The pedestrian froze when he saw the truck coming toward him, similar to a deer in headlights, Quintero said. Investigators are waiting for toxicology tests on the pedestrian.
If a vehicle breaks down and the driver is stranded in the median, Quintero said drivers should stay in the car with the seat belt fastened and call police from a cell phone.
Even if the driver has no cell phone, he said, passersby regularly call the CHP to report stranded motorists, so help will eventually arrive. http://www.lodinews.com/articles/200...ian_080513.txt | |
