Teen commits suicide by running into path of big rig

Teen commits suicide by running into path of big rig
8/5/08
Victorville Daily Press, CA
Quote:
VICTORVILLE — A despondent 14-year-old girl ran into the path of a tractor trailer early Tuesday morning on Interstate 15 near Mojave Drive and was killed, officials said.

The teen was upset over personal matters and said she wanted to kill herself, according to California Highway Patrol officials.

The teen, identified by San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Coroner’s officials as Crystal Pasalis of Adelanto, was visiting friends in Victorville when she ran from the home and climbed the perimeter around the freeway.

Burning alive in a wreck and having some one jump in front of my truck are two of my worst fears of driving.

A sad situation all the way around for both the girl's family and the driver.

I'm glad it wasn't me ... on either side of the equation. Sometimes, finding a reason to stay alive is the toughest thing to do, but a permanent solution to (what is sometimes) a temporary problem isn't the answer either.

This is such a tragedy. I live near an Amtrack line here in southern cal and sometimes people commit suicide by jumping in front of the train. First time I have heard of it happening to a big truck like this.

I am new here and hope my question is not out of line but I am curious in this instance what becomes of this particular truck drivers career? No doubt he/she is in shock over this.

Its safe to say the driver will never be the same.

I haven't heard on some one stepping in front of the truck but those that drive in front of a truck to die I've heard always make eye contact a millisecond before impact. That is what messes the driver up.

It's so sad, especially being a teenager. It's bad when teens think that they have no where to turn except to death. I couldn't even imagine what it is like to experience something like that nor do I want to.

So now I'm wondering again....Does most companies offer some kind of grievence counseling and paid off-time for something like this??? If not then what do companies offer???

I just couldn't imagine a driver getting back into a truck for a while after something like this.

Seeing as most trucking companies are in the stone-age with respect to benefits; if he's lucky he will have access to some kind of Employee Assistance Plan (EAP) as part of his benefits, but it would be very, very unusual to have paid leave. More likely he's probably on his own ... but just not for too long or "we'll have to find another driver".

That is so sad that she thought she had to end her life. I feel for the truck driver and I agree he will never be the same.

My BIL had this happen to him, thankfully he was able to avoid the on comming car, and then called it in. They caught the gal. He did say that she had a look in her eyes that he would never forget.
